Chiropractic

WHAT IS IT?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Chiropractic as “the health profession that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effects that these can produce in the functioning of the nervous system and in general health”.

Although here in Spain it is still not very well known, Chiropractic is widespread and recognized as a health profession in many other countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, etc.

There are many currents within the profession, but at SHIVAYA we have a holistic and vitalist approach to the human body since we focus our vision of health on the inherent capacity of the human body to heal and self-regenerate itself, naturally, without the help of agents. external factors such as drugs or surgery.

HOW WE WORK

At Shivaya we work naturally with our hands, through specific movements on the patient’s body, mainly the spine, called chiropractic ADJUSTMENTS. These adjustments can range from rapid pulses on vertebral subluxations to reposition the vertebrae and release ‘nerve pinches’, to gentle pulses to stimulate the body and restore its balance (homeostasis) allowing it to return to an optimal state of function.

WHAT IS A VERTEBRAL SUBLUXATION?

It is a word that we use a lot in consultation. Vertebral subluxation occurs when one or several vertebrae have lost their correct alignment or movement, resulting in an alteration in the flow of information that occurs through the nerves. Most of the time they go unnoticed since they do not cause pain or discomfort, but other times they can cause migraines, dizziness, allergies, back pain, sciatica, otitis, asthma, digestive problems,…

Babies and children

Babies and children often go to the Chiropractor for:

  • Grow up healthy and with an aligned spine and a healthy nervous system
  • Treat traumas that occurred during pregnancy and childbirth
  • Reduce infant colic and its intensity
  • Improve sleep problems (reconciliation and/or maintenance), irritability, nervousness, stress caused by a nervous system in a state of “alert” (sympathetic nervous system).
  • Treat torticollis
  • Reduce ear infections (otitis media)
  • Improve plagiocephaly: deformation in the bones of the skull
  • Help with respiratory problems (asthma, bronchitis)
  • Facilitate breastfeeding when the baby has a preference for one side, sucking problems, etc.

During the first years of life, the neurological system of babies plays a crucial role in their health and their correct development and growth. Our son faces many stimuli unknown to him until now: he begins to breathe through his nose, eat through his mouth, digest, begin to see colors, pick up objects, try to get up, fall, start to run, etc. All these functions are controlled by your nervous system, which is why we must make sure that your spine is healthy and aligned and does not cause any interference in the message that passes from the brain to the rest of the body.

In chiropractic we talk about the first subluxation that can occur in the uterus, due to the fetal positioning of the baby, followed by the birth process, even if it is natural and respectful (although obviously the more instrumentalized, the more traumatic it can be for the little one). Many times the effects of these initial subluxations are notorious, such as the appearance of colic, irritability, sleep problems, etc. But other times they can be silent and not manifest until adulthood.

That is why it is not necessary for your child to manifest pain or noticeable health problems to visit a chiropractor. In fact, a review of the spine and nervous system, the sooner the better! Since babies and children are much more flexible and moldable.

Adolescents and adults

Most adolescents and adults who go to the Chiropractor usually do so for:

  • Back pain: cervical, dorsal or lumbar area
  • Sciatica and/or herniated discs
  • Scoliosis (lateral deviation of the spine)
  • Headache, migraines
  • Dizziness and vertigo
  • Bruxism, stress, anxiety
  • Sleep problems: conciliation and maintenance
  • Digestive problems: reflux, constipation, abdominal pain
  • Respiratory problems: asthma, bronchitis
  • Lack of concentration

All of these symptoms can have their origin in the nervous system and spine, and are your body’s ways of alerting you that something is not working properly and needs your attention.

Our goal as chiropractors is to rid your body of nervous system interference to allow it to function to its fullest potential and gain health and quality of life.

Pregnant women

Pregnant women who come to our office usually do so for:

  • Sciatica
  • Lumbago and/or pubalgia (pain in the lower back and/or pubis)
  • Tiredness, lack of energy, sleep disturbance
  • Childbirth preparation
  • Stress release for optimal fetal positioning

During pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes many changes. At the musculoskeletal level, the ligaments become more elastic to modify the position of the pelvis and lumbar spine in order to give the fetus more space and prepare for childbirth. During these 9 months the curvatures of the spine are altered, the center of gravity shifts, the way of walking changes, etc. Sometimes, the body is not able to adapt to all these changes and aches and pains can appear that, although they are frequent, should NOT appear.

During this stage of life, people who go to the Chiropractor usually notice:

  • Increased mobility and flexibility
  • Fewer falls or loss of balance
  • Greater coordination
  • Greater autonomy
  • Delay of bone aging and wear
  • Greater vitality
Athletes

High performance sport needs a body functioning at 100% of its possibilities, which must imply a nervous system completely free of interference, and that is that a balanced body allows:

  • Less recovery time
  • Increased coordination and balance
  • Increased lung capacity
  • Less number of injuries

That is why well-known athletes such as Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Carles Puyol, Messi, Jorge Lorenzo, Usain Bolt, etc. They go to the chiropractor regularly. In fact, at the last Olympics most picks had a sports chiropractor on the team.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Is Chiropractic safe?

During the first years of life, the neurological system of babies and children plays a crucial role in their health and correct development and growth All the functions of your body are carried out thanks to the fact that the brain sends the stimulus to the body and responds. The vertebral column is mainly responsible for protecting this nervous system and at these ages it is subjected to many blows, falls, weight (backpack ), etc. That’s why we have to take care of it, regardless of age.

In chiropractic we talk that the first subluxation can happen in the womb, due to the fetal positioning of the baby, followed by the birth process , even if it is natural and respectful. Many times the effects of these initial subluxations are noticeable, such as the onset of colic, irritability, sleep problems, etc. But other times they can be silent and not manifest until adulthood.

That’s why your daughter doesn’t need to be in pain or have noticeable health problems to visit a chiropractor. Indeed, a review of the spine and nervous system, The sooner the better! as babies and children are very more flexible and mouldable.

What education does a Chiropractor have?

Chiropractors receive a minimum 5-year training at specialized universities to guarantee quality and safety. Throughout the course, we take subjects common to all health professions (anatomy, physiology, pathology,…) and delve into others more specific to the profession such as chiropractic techniques, radiology, neurology, etc.

Due to the current legal vacuum regarding Chiropractic in Spain (no approval) we can find people who do “manipulations on the spine” without having the necessary training to know how to do it correctly. That is why, in order to find a properly qualified professional, we recommend you consult the website of the Spanish Chiropractic Association.

Is chiropractic compatible with other treatments?

Totally. There is no incompatibility with other treatments whether medical, physiotherapeutic, etc. They are completely complementary procedures. In fact, by having both courses, in the same session we can combine chiropractic adjustments with physiotherapeutic treatment. Just be sure to let us know which ones you’re following.

What is the difference between Chiropractic and Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is known to almost everyone. There are many branches (respi, cardio, neuro) but undoubtedly the most widespread is trauma. In this “specialty” physiotherapists focus mainly on rehabilitating the area where an injury has been suffered. Manual therapy (stretching, traction, massage therapy, etc.) is usually used, as well as therapeutic exercise and external agents such as ultrasound, TENS (electrodes), thermotherapy, etc.
However, Chiropractic is responsible for freeing the nervous system from the interferences that may be present in the message that passes between brain and body, especially at the level of the spine. We do this through chiropractic adjustments, where we use our hands almost exclusively. In this way we focus more on a salutogenic model and not so much on a pathogenic model.

I just want to treat myself with physiotherapy, is that possible?

Currently in our center it is NOT possible to carry out exclusively physiotherapeutic treatment. In fact, we prefer to treat mainly with chiropractic and add, if necessary, some physical therapy techniques.

What does the first visit consist of?

The first visit will last approximately 45 minutes/1 hour. We will perform a comprehensive anamnesis of your health history to understand well where we are starting from and how we can help you. Next we will do a series of functional tests, we will look at your posture and we will perform a complete analysis of your vertebral column.

Who will take care of my treatment?

Lara Doménech Léga will take care of your entire treatment. If you want to know more, click here.

How many sessions will I need?

We cannot give you a specific number, as it depends a lot on each person: type of problem, chronicity of it, age , health history, goals, etc.

All these details will be given to us on the first visit, and we will discuss them the next time we meet to deliver the report. We usually recommend a more intensive initial phase of treatment, followed by a maintenance phase in order not to go back and preserve the progress.

What are your prices?

The first visit has a cost of €75 (evaluation + adjustment + report).

The rest of the individual visits have a cost of €55 however, most patients purchase a multi-visit voucher which significantly reduces the price adjustments.

Can I go to the chiropractor if I'm pregnant?

Of course it is. In fact, we recommend it, since chiropractic treatment helps the quality of life of the mother and the well-being of the fetus.

Due to the growth of the fetus and the mother’s belly, we will be modifying our techniques throughout the pregnancy, mainly using the Webster, technique which is special for pregnant women.
