Chiropractic
WHAT IS IT?
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Chiropractic as “the health profession that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effects that these can produce in the functioning of the nervous system and in general health”.
Although here in Spain it is still not very well known, Chiropractic is widespread and recognized as a health profession in many other countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, etc.
There are many currents within the profession, but at SHIVAYA we have a holistic and vitalist approach to the human body since we focus our vision of health on the inherent capacity of the human body to heal and self-regenerate itself, naturally, without the help of agents. external factors such as drugs or surgery.
HOW WE WORK
At Shivaya we work naturally with our hands, through specific movements on the patient’s body, mainly the spine, called chiropractic ADJUSTMENTS. These adjustments can range from rapid pulses on vertebral subluxations to reposition the vertebrae and release ‘nerve pinches’, to gentle pulses to stimulate the body and restore its balance (homeostasis) allowing it to return to an optimal state of function.
WHAT IS A VERTEBRAL SUBLUXATION?
It is a word that we use a lot in consultation. Vertebral subluxation occurs when one or several vertebrae have lost their correct alignment or movement, resulting in an alteration in the flow of information that occurs through the nerves. Most of the time they go unnoticed since they do not cause pain or discomfort, but other times they can cause migraines, dizziness, allergies, back pain, sciatica, otitis, asthma, digestive problems,…

FREQUENT QUESTIONS
Is Chiropractic safe?
During the first years of life, the neurological system of babies and children plays a crucial role in their health and correct development and growth All the functions of your body are carried out thanks to the fact that the brain sends the stimulus to the body and responds. The vertebral column is mainly responsible for protecting this nervous system and at these ages it is subjected to many blows, falls, weight (backpack ), etc. That’s why we have to take care of it, regardless of age.
In chiropractic we talk that the first subluxation can happen in the womb, due to the fetal positioning of the baby, followed by the birth process , even if it is natural and respectful. Many times the effects of these initial subluxations are noticeable, such as the onset of colic, irritability, sleep problems, etc. But other times they can be silent and not manifest until adulthood.
That’s why your daughter doesn’t need to be in pain or have noticeable health problems to visit a chiropractor. Indeed, a review of the spine and nervous system, The sooner the better! as babies and children are very more flexible and mouldable.
What education does a Chiropractor have?
Chiropractors receive a minimum 5-year training at specialized universities to guarantee quality and safety. Throughout the course, we take subjects common to all health professions (anatomy, physiology, pathology,…) and delve into others more specific to the profession such as chiropractic techniques, radiology, neurology, etc.
Due to the current legal vacuum regarding Chiropractic in Spain (no approval) we can find people who do “manipulations on the spine” without having the necessary training to know how to do it correctly. That is why, in order to find a properly qualified professional, we recommend you consult the website of the Spanish Chiropractic Association.
Is chiropractic compatible with other treatments?
Totally. There is no incompatibility with other treatments whether medical, physiotherapeutic, etc. They are completely complementary procedures. In fact, by having both courses, in the same session we can combine chiropractic adjustments with physiotherapeutic treatment. Just be sure to let us know which ones you’re following.
What is the difference between Chiropractic and Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is known to almost everyone. There are many branches (respi, cardio, neuro) but undoubtedly the most widespread is trauma. In this “specialty” physiotherapists focus mainly on rehabilitating the area where an injury has been suffered. Manual therapy (stretching, traction, massage therapy, etc.) is usually used, as well as therapeutic exercise and external agents such as ultrasound, TENS (electrodes), thermotherapy, etc.
However, Chiropractic is responsible for freeing the nervous system from the interferences that may be present in the message that passes between brain and body, especially at the level of the spine. We do this through chiropractic adjustments, where we use our hands almost exclusively. In this way we focus more on a salutogenic model and not so much on a pathogenic model.
I just want to treat myself with physiotherapy, is that possible?
Currently in our center it is NOT possible to carry out exclusively physiotherapeutic treatment. In fact, we prefer to treat mainly with chiropractic and add, if necessary, some physical therapy techniques.

How many sessions will I need?
We cannot give you a specific number, as it depends a lot on each person: type of problem, chronicity of it, age , health history, goals, etc.
All these details will be given to us on the first visit, and we will discuss them the next time we meet to deliver the report. We usually recommend a more intensive initial phase of treatment, followed by a maintenance phase in order not to go back and preserve the progress.
What are your prices?
The first visit has a cost of €75 (evaluation + adjustment + report).
The rest of the individual visits have a cost of €55 however, most patients purchase a multi-visit voucher which significantly reduces the price adjustments.
Can I go to the chiropractor if I'm pregnant?
Of course it is. In fact, we recommend it, since chiropractic treatment helps the quality of life of the mother and the well-being of the fetus.
Due to the growth of the fetus and the mother’s belly, we will be modifying our techniques throughout the pregnancy, mainly using the Webster, technique which is special for pregnant women.
